Temporal Lobe — Cerebral Cortex

The temporal lobes run along the sides of the brain and are primarily responsible for processing auditory information and encoding memory. They house the primary auditory cortex and Wernicke's area, which is critical for language comprehension.

Anatomy & Location

The temporal lobes sit roughly behind the temples, one on each side of the brain, below the lateral fissure that separates them from the frontal and parietal lobes. Tucked inside the temporal lobe's medial (inner) surface are two structures covered in their own articles on this site: the hippocampus and the amygdala. The outer surface houses the primary auditory cortex and, typically in the left hemisphere, Wernicke's area.

Function in Depth

The temporal lobe's best-known job is hearing: the primary auditory cortex receives and processes sound signals relayed from the ears via the thalamus, handling everything from pitch and volume to the recognition of speech sounds and music. Wernicke's area, usually in the left temporal lobe, is essential for language comprehension - it's where incoming speech is decoded into meaning, working in tandem with the frontal lobe's Broca's area, which handles speech production.

The temporal lobe is also deeply involved in memory. While the hippocampus (embedded within it) does the heavy lifting of forming new memories, the surrounding temporal cortex stores long-term semantic memory - facts, concepts, and general knowledge about the world - and is involved in recognising faces and objects.

Notable Research & History

In the 1930s–50s, Canadian neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield mapped the brain's surface by electrically stimulating it in awake patients undergoing epilepsy surgery. When he stimulated points on the temporal lobe, some patients reported vivid, spontaneous memories or a strong sense of déjà vu - evidence that the temporal lobe holds a direct, almost literal link to memory and the feeling of familiarity. This work laid the foundation for modern epilepsy surgery and functional brain mapping.

When Something Goes Wrong

The temporal lobe is the most common origin point for focal seizures in temporal lobe epilepsy, one of the most frequent forms of epilepsy in adults. It's also one of the earliest and most severely affected regions in Alzheimer's disease, which helps explain why memory loss and word-finding difficulty are often among its first noticeable symptoms. Damage to the left temporal lobe - from stroke, injury, or tumour - can cause Wernicke's aphasia, a language disorder in which speech remains fluent but often loses coherent meaning; see our stroke & aphasia article for more.
