Parietal Lobe — Cerebral Cortex

Located behind the frontal lobe, the parietal lobe integrates sensory information from various parts of the body. It plays a key role in processing touch, pressure, temperature, and pain, as well as spatial awareness and navigation. It also assists in language and mathematical reasoning.

The parietal lobe contains the somatosensory cortex, which maps the entire surface of the body - with the hands and face taking up a disproportionately large area.

Anatomy & Location

The parietal lobe sits at the top-back of the brain, wedged between the frontal lobe (in front, across the central sulcus), the occipital lobe (behind), and the temporal lobe (below, across the lateral fissure). Its front-most strip, running parallel to the frontal lobe's motor cortex, is the primary somatosensory cortex - the parietal lobe's equivalent "body map" for incoming sensation rather than outgoing movement.

Function in Depth

The parietal lobe's headline job is integration: it takes raw sensory signals - touch, temperature, pain, pressure, and the body's sense of its own position in space (proprioception) - and combines them into a coherent picture of where your body is and what's happening to it. The somatosensory cortex is organised somatotopically, much like the frontal lobe's motor strip, with a "sensory homunculus" that devotes outsized territory to the lips, hands, and face relative to their physical size, reflecting how sensitive those areas are.

Beyond basic sensation, the parietal lobe (particularly on the right side) is central to spatial awareness - judging distances, mentally rotating objects, and navigating your surroundings. It also contributes to numerical cognition and calculation, and works alongside temporal and frontal regions in language comprehension, especially reading and understanding spatial or relational language ("the cup is behind the box").

Notable Research & History

Much of what we know about the parietal lobe comes from studying patients with damage to it. A striking phenomenon called hemispatial neglect occurs after damage to the right parietal lobe (often from stroke): patients lose awareness of the left side of space, sometimes failing to eat food on the left half of their plate or draw the left half of a clock face, despite having no problem with their eyes or the left side of their body itself. This taught neuroscientists that the parietal lobe doesn't just process sensory input - it actively constructs our subjective map of space.

When Something Goes Wrong

Parietal lobe damage, most often from stroke, can produce a range of effects depending on which side and area is involved: loss of the ability to localise touch, difficulty with spatial tasks and navigation, trouble with reading or arithmetic, or the neglect syndrome described above. Because it sits near language areas, some forms of aphasia also involve parietal lobe damage.
