Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition typically identified in childhood, though it's increasingly recognised and diagnosed in adults, sometimes for the first time later in life. It involves persistent, developmentally atypical patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, or a combination, that meaningfully affect functioning at school, work, or in relationships. ADHD is understood as a difference in brain development and connectivity, not a matter of willpower or discipline.
Neuroimaging research has consistently pointed to differences in the frontal lobe, particularly the prefrontal cortex, which governs executive functions such as sustained attention, impulse control, and working memory - the very capacities most affected in ADHD. Some studies have also found differences in cerebellar structure and its connectivity with the frontal lobe, consistent with the cerebellum's broader, still-emerging role in cognition and attention beyond motor coordination.
Research increasingly frames ADHD as involving differences in the maturation timeline and connectivity of attention- and control-related brain networks, rather than any single "broken" region. Treatment commonly combines behavioural strategies (structure, routines, skills training) with medication that affects dopamine and norepinephrine signalling in these circuits. Ongoing research is examining long-term outcomes across the lifespan, the condition's genetic basis, and how it presents differently across individuals, including groups historically under-diagnosed such as girls and adults.
